Posted in three different forms just for funzies

This is the PP with an extra slide added to show the instruction page my students will see from the moodle. Attached seperatly is the rubric

Grade Level: 9
Subject Area: World History
Title: Ancient River Civilizations
Standards:

  • 1.05: Trace major themes in the development of the world from its origins to the rise of early civilizations
  • 1.06: Recognize and examine the indicators of civilization, including writing, labor, specialization, cities, technology, trade, and political and cultural institutions
  • 2.01: Trace the development and assess the achievements of early river civilizations.

Time Required: 3-4 90 minute class days
Resources: computer, books
Details / Task Analysis/lesson narrative: Students will use various tools to found their own civilization mimicking one of the original River Valley Civ’s. Students are going in 'cold' at first with no front loaded knowledge and must use google maps to choose which of 4 geographic areas they will choose to settle their civilization (keep in mind we have already covered geography and the required factors of civilization). Students will use a google form as their formative assessment which will allow me to track the data and force them to justify their choices. Students will then go back and forth between the experiential lesson and direct instruction/webquests about thier individual culutre. They will need to ID the key factors of civilizations, make choices about the growth of thier own civilizations, interact and collaborate with thier group members and the members who chose a near by civ. At the end students will have gained in depth knowledge of the early civilizations through hands on tech-driven experiences. The final written or produced product will be the final summative assesment as well as the unit test.

Lesson Assessment Plan:
1) How will you assess knowledge prior to the lesson? Anecdotal in class. I don't want them to know about the civs before we begin since that scews the process
2) How will you assess learning after teaching? tests/links to new units based on the old
3) If reteaching is needed, exactly what steps will you take to make sure each student will succeed. the beatings will continue until morale improves

Reflection:
Formative assessment: Google form asking where they are going to put their civilization and why. Allows them to form their thoughts and me to easily track their answers
Summative: ongoing journal of their trip and experience...where they went and why on a google doc or moodle forum so that they can collaborate at home
How is this technology integration meaningful; how does this lesson go beyond what teachers are able to do in a traditional classroom (hint: it should)?
Students should be able to use technology for visual cues of geography to make informed decisions of where to place their civ’s. They should use googledocs to journal their journey and decisions as they are made and presentation software to navigate a choose your own adventure type thing

Not enough for you?.....my you are a glutton for punishment....

  • Submit links to lesson below : ok, I will.
  • Groups have 10-15 minutes each to share their lesson with the participants. They should provide: did it...you should have been there. It was epic. Multi-million dollar sound effects, George Lucas came by and cried knowing he would never be able to create anything as awe inspiring as our presentations.
    • Rationale for lesson : I am always rational...oh wait, rationale...yeah, all there. For students to understand the factors that went into the creation of river valley civilizations; the 5 factors of civilization
    • Explanation of how formative assessment is used: dropped it like it's hot...see above...using the form
    • Explanation of activities with brief demo: agian...epic! Up until the net dropped my signal
    • Explanation of how students will collaborate: done...see above I think...students can collaborate face to face in class (how 20th century) and then at home use moodle forum and google docs depending on what stage of the project they are in
    • Explanation of how group sharing or discussion will occur: That would be the spot above...it depends on where they are in the process. My honors students can do this at home, not so much my standard...they just won't...so they will mostly work in class

  • There will be a brief Q & A after each presentation so that participants can discuss positive aspects and items they may consider changing with rationale as to why They grilled me....I cried, they laughed, we all went out for an adult beverage and told ghost stories around the fire.

Lesson Deliverables:
  1. Lesson Plan is created using a Google Docs template (save a copy of this document). Did it, it's just above
  2. Lesson will contain content-specific web 2.0 tools
      • maps I'm there....look here
      • draw (with CC or similar images) Not yet...I'd rather use funnytimes.com. I'm suggesting they use glogster for their final product
      • etc. form. here too
  3. Lesson must include student collaboration to complete activities: yes. Most of it will be collaboration in that they must work in groups and at various points it will be completed on their own time using moodle forum or google docs
  4. Lesson must include opportunity for group sharing and discussion following activity: that is the summative when they create their final journal type thingy and they debrief to the class as to how succesful they were
  5. Lesson must be shared on the wiki page provided. I have a few of the links attached but this one may need a password moodle so try this one instead

Final Project Guidelines
Use the following guidelines to help you create your lesson. You must meet the expectations of each characteristic to receive credit for this workshop.
Characteristics of Project
Meets Expectations
Proof
Goals and Objectives
Goals and Objectives are clearly stated and appropriate for the given lesson
goals are stated in standard course of study
objective: students will be able to trace the beginings and characteristics of the early river valley civilizations by engaging in an experiential activity where they will form their own civilizations
Sequencing and Flow
The sequence of the lesson adequately flows and supports the goals
Sequence is mixed between experiential and direct instructions. Students begin by choosing a location for their civilization and detailing the reasons for that choice using google maps and google forms. Students will collaborate in their choice with their teammates. They will then learn about the civilizations in direct insturction. After they will use web quests to find specific info culminatinvg in a multi-media product show casing their civilizations.Students will then be assessed in their knowledge with a google form quiz to see how much info they retained and if re-teaching is needed.
Lesson Outline
Outline of Lesson is clear, coherent, and descriptive
see above. It flows in order of the civ. as they develop. Students go back and forth between imagining/analyzing/and extrapolating vs. learning the materiel from direct instruction and webquests
Standards
Correct state/national standards are stated and incorporated into lesson
Yes they are.
We are looking at early civs, what they needed to begin and why they needed these things
Part of the webquest will be looking at the factors of civilization to their specific culture
and of course this whole lesson is designed around the creation of river civs
Audience
Activities and overall lesson is appropriate for intended audience
I have 9th graders and this will be early in the year. Most of them come to me with some computer knowledge but some serious gaps in good research skills so a lot of their research will be guided and controled for this early session
Incorporation of Course Content
Lesson incorporates ideas and shows understanding of material learned throughout the institute
Working a lot with imbeded google items that moodle does not do well. Forms to track data, maps which moodle does not do at all, allowing students to work together in one spot to keep their documents together using docs. Keeping everything tied to the standard and to a goal of student learning and achievment to avoid the tech being used as a 'toy' rather than a tool
Resources and Technology
States and uses appropriate resources and technology that enhance the lesson
I'll need textbook, varied websites for the webquest, google docs, moodle, google earth, basic writing supplies, some form of presentation software which they will choose based on there preferences
Evaluation and Assessment
Assessment plan is addressed and incorporates lesson's goals and objectives
Formative includes the google form which will document their initial thoughts and research then move into the end 'journal' which will be their collaborative google doc and forum posts culminating in an end product that traces their civilization from begining to the end of 'river civs'
Originality
Lesson is participant's original work. Aspects that are not original work are appropriately credited to the given person/organization/site responsible for its creation
Yep, it's all me. I was originally thinking about it while exploring google earth and deciding that I wanted at least 1 project for every unit that produced something that required higher order skills and hopefully tech.
